PRESS RELEASE

NEW YORK, NY — January 28, 2005 — Pickled Arts Center (1 Fei Jia Cun Chao yang District, Lai Guang Ying Dong Lu Beijing 100103) is pleased to announce the opening of Charles Hecht's new exhibit featuring a series of steel American and Chinese flag sculptures. The exhibition is sheduled to run from February 1st to 28th.

Following the 2002-2003 Hannah series, which consisted of steel American flags that were influenced by Hecht's nine-year-old granddaughter's school project, the new flags incorporate the artist's new surroundings and explore national Chinese symbols. Hecht has been working in Beijing since last fall and his works are getting bigger and bolder, expanding to over fourteen feet in width. The artist experiments with the three-dimensionality of a flag, forging the metal to give the illusion of lightness; fashioning these immense and heavy structures to appear like flags stirred by a breeze. Additionally, he investigates light and shadow play by setting relief elements onto the assemblages. These sculptures work especially well outdoors, utilizing the movement of the sun upon their reflective surfaces.

This is Hecht's second solo exhibition in Beijing. He has previously exhibited his sculptures throughout America, Germany and Spain. You can read more about his work and experiences in Beijing in his "China Diary" published in NY Arts Magazine (http://www.nyartsmagazine.com).
