Day 4 Thursday
August 17, 2006
I got up early to work on the new wood cut. After
about two hours of drawing I then starting to carve,
I realized that my carving was getting sloppy so I
stopped. I then decided to do some errands. First I
rode over to the Pickled Arts Center to look for my
box of DuraTuff, some books that I had left there by
accident last time and to say hello to some of Li
Gang’s employees who I had not yet seen. The damage
caused by the flood was devastating. However the
upstairs rooms were occupied, including the room
that I stayed in last time. It had been cleaned out
for the new tenant, an American artist. There was no
case of DuraTuff, nor could I find my books. I then
rode to the computer print shop to say hello to the
people there. I had trouble finding it. They had
moved and doubled their space. They were three doors
down from where they used to be. After talking with
them for a while I then headed back to SAC. Wendy
and Mei were at the Artist Inn and so I gave them
their presents. Wendy really seemed to like the art
book that I got her and Mei seemed pleased with the
earrings, but noted that her ears weren’t pierced so
she would have to have them pierced in order to wear
them.
David, Oxy and myself rode off to the restaurant
near the Pickled Arts Center which I frequented a
number of times on my last visit. The food was still
good and they had made some new additions including
a big air conditioner. Every time I go there I
notice that they have improved the physical
facilities. They have also raised the prices.
I had dinner with Ivy Zhou and Gong at Ta Dun a/k/a
The Garden Restaurant. It was good to see them
again.
We talked about doing some joint projects in
a non-art area. It was good to see Ivy as we have
been friends for almost ten years now. Since they
were unsure of the directions and Beigau is a
strange area to those who live downtown, I decided
to meet them at the restaurant before showing them
the new sculpture and where I lived. They got lost.
Fortunately with the cell phone I was able to guide
them back to the road on which Ta Dun was located
and we were able to join up. We then looked at the
new sculpture and we exchanged gifts. Since I had
noticed that they had no art in their apartment I
gave them a framed wood cut from the June show at
the 2 Line Gallery in the 798 district.
After lunch I met with Li Gang and we just talked
about art and I watched him paint and I did some
more work on cleaning up the large bronze sculpture.

Li Gang and I then went to the art district because
he had to pick up some large light boxes for an
upcoming show at Two Lines Gallery. I saw Tony Smith
and met two artists from Melbourne, Australia who
are showing with him, one of whom was originally
from Vienna, Austria. We helped set up the show and
then I came back to the compound.
